Such is the thanks Negan gets for aiding Carol in overthrowing the Whisperers. The setup for Negan’s stroll down nightmare lane comes courtesy of Carol, whose solution for the cut-it-with-a-knife tension between Neegs and Maggie is to ship him out of A-town to a remote cabin (funny how there never seems to be a shortage of horror-movie-ready cabins around here). So instead of a jerk who gets jerkier, the television Negan turns out to be a deeply flawed but essentially good-hearted dude who lost the one thing he cared about, never forgave himself for it, and took out his pain - and his shame - on everyone else. After his first appearance in the season-six finale, Jeffery Dean Morgan said he imagined Negan was the “dick” you knew in high school, and that he “didn’t turn into this in one day.” But being rotten to the core doesn’t make for a sympathetic antihero, especially one who’s married to the saintly Lucille. I spent a minute looking back at what we already knew of Negan’s history before the apocalypse and learned that in the comics, he was always an asshole. Rick adapted to the world slowly over time which is why he survived and Shane didn't.As lousy as last week’s episode was, the much-anticipated Negan origin story is that excellent, living up to its considerably great expectations. Compared to Rick's first killings in the episode "Nebraska", Shane was pathetic. Shane was weak he didn't have the mental capacity to deal with the world.

He could never control his anger and was too impulsive. After killing Otis, Shane spiraled even more, having hallucinations and becoming irrationally paranoid.

He killed someone because he thought he needed to yet couldn't live with it. Shane killing Otis was another marker that he just wasn't built for that world. Shane couldn't handle losing a woman that wasn't his to begin with, let alone navigating the moral challenges the apocalypse presented. He started spiraling as soon as Rick stepped onto the camp outside of Atlanta. Maybe I'm wrong but I've noticed a lot of TWD fans will make the argument that Shane adapted to the world before Rick did or that S5 Rick is equivalent to a S1 Shane.
